Visual effects today have come a long way from the early days of cinema and when computers came along, CGI was about to turn those awkward effects into something believable. Nowadays, effects can appear realistic and blend in seamlessly with the filmed material, but to get to this point, there was a lot of cringeworthy CGI in the 80s and mostly in the 90s.
Diane Bullock compiled some of the more ‘stand out’ film VFX from the 90s and made this video which makes us realise how far we’ve come.
On another note: One of the pioneers of CGI on TV, Ron Thornton (Babylon 5, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and many other shows) has passed away. His company, Foundation Imaging, was responsible for pushing the technology of the day (what was mostly film quality VFX) and bringing it to the small screen. Ron was one of the reasons I got into visual effects in a previous life.
