The Reason Why All World Maps Are Wrong

If you take any map, look at continents, countries, etc. and most of us have this fixed view of how large each place is in relation to other areas. However, they’re mostly all wrong in terms of represented size. Part of this is due to political/cultural history and the desire to represent certain nations as larger than others.

Another reason, which this video from Vox explains, is that it’s practically impossible to represent the earth in flat maps: “The surface of a sphere cannot be represented as a plane without some form of distortion.”

Take a look this site to see the true size of countries.
